Compelled by the two-dimensional format of ceramic tiles, Susan Greenleaf has been creating fine art tiles for much for much of her artistic career. Walking the line between sculpture and drawing, Susan's tiles draw inspiration from plants, animals, and symbolic imagery. Viewers familiar with her other work will recognize the techniques of bas-relief and attention to line quality.

One-of-a-kind framed tiles
These individual framed tiles are a new take on the medium. Rather than existing as a collection of identical or complimentary pieces, each tile is stand-alone. Using techniques such as intaglio, carving, bas-relief and , Susan nestles each tile in a scavenged antique wood frame.
In her daily life Susan collects intriguing botanical and organic materials, keeping a constant eye out for the captivating patterns found in nature. From these specimens, she creates individual handmade negative plates in bisqued clay and plaster. Over the years she has built up a significant library of re-useable organic forms, as well as both found and created textures. Drawing from this source, Susan then compiles thematic elements to create unique porcelain compositions in a true exploration of line, pattern, image and symbol.
