Ceramic artist Susan Greenleaf of Washington, DC explores form and surface texture with a strong involvement in the mysteries of the natural world. Susan pursues the limits of clay in her work, creating not only wheel-thrown and handbuilt pieces but often combining multiple techniques to create classical and organic forms. Her aesthetic combines functional elegance with a deep intuition of the organic structures and patterns found in nature.
Recurrent themes in her works include bas-relief horse and botanical elements, often seen on functional vessels such as vases, mugs, and bowls. Susan favors the use of ash celadon glaze and heavy metal stains to bring life to her clay. |
Susan Greenleaf did her early art studies at Trinity University in San Antonio, TX, Cambridge MA, New York City, and the Columbia Visual Arts Center/Antioch University in Columbia, MD. Later she studied, apprenticed and taught in Geneva, Switzerland. She has exhibited at the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian, the Folger Shakespeare Anne Hathaway gallery and has done two one-person shows at the National Zoo Gallery. Over the years, Susan has had numerous exhibits across the U.S. and in Europe and her work can be found in collections worldwide.
